Malaysian MotoGP 2011
23rd October 2011 will be remembered as a dark day for Malaysian motor sports and for the MotoGP series. On the 2nd lap of the race, Italian rider Marco Simoncelli was involved in a fatal accident involving fellow riders Collin Edwards and Valentino Rossi. The world watched in horror at the severity of the crash and the social media was quickly overflowing with videos, tweets and unconfirmed news on Marco's condition. The race was brought to a halt and all riders returned to the pit. After an agonizing wait, it was announced that Marco had sadly succumbed to his injuries at 4:56pm local time. The race was cancelled.
It is a grim reminder that despite all the glamor, motor sports is and will remain a dangerous pursuits.
Rest in peace, Marco.
